Reliefs

From the mid-1960s until the late 1970s, Rokus created several reliefs. According to Rokus, Size, form, and colour change as the viewer changes position, with light and shadow playing a game.

These reliefs represent a spatial 'translation' of his two-dimensional colour research and paintings. Rokus rotates colours according to a predetermined pattern, creating a play of colours and colour mixing where they overlap. The translation into three dimensions occurs where colours get height.

Initially, Rokus worked this out with white 'translations' in his reliefs. In his later work, the volumes gained colour, and a movement of colour, contrast, and reflections emerged.
