Rokus van Blokland (1926-2018) studied Graphic Design and Photography at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague from 1945 to 1949. At that time Gerard Kiljan, Paul Schuitema and Gerard de Vries taught at the academy.
After graduating Rokus van Blokland enrolled in a new study for Industrial Design which was established in that year at the same academy. Teachers were among other Gerard Kiljan, Cor Alons and Gerrit Rietveld.
Van Blokland graduated in 1953 as one of the first industrial designers in the Netherlands.
While studying Industrial Design in 1950, Rokus van Blokland started designing for Sio (Speelgoed -Toy- Industry Overijssel). In the early 50's Rokus started designing for other companies such as Hasco, a paint factory in Schoonhoven. For decades Rokus designed their packings, stands and colour systems.
Later he worked for other companies as well, as Nederhorst in Gouda, Mourik in Groot-Ammers and others.
The 'Doubles' series is based on Sio mobilo. New elements make it possible to build cars, boats or a crane.

During the course 'Cursus Industrial Design', Van Blokland designed this wagon with blocks which can be fully dismantled. Gerrit Rietveld formulated the assignment to design toys as: 'Toys where the package becomes part of the playing'.
